Science of the Light:
The process of light production is called bioluminescence. It is result of a chemical reaction within specialized organs present in the abdomen of the firefly.
Communication Through Light:
One of the most fascinating aspect of the light produced by the firefly is that they use it as a mode of communication. Each firefly specie has its own unique pattern of flash and such sequences also plays a role in species recognition. This communication system is also critical for survival and reproduction of firefly.
Reflectors of Healthy Ecosystem:
Fireflies reflect the heath of their terrestrial environment. As they have very specific requirements therefore they can't be found everywhere. They require a clean environment and tall grasses to breed and develop. If there is a decrease in their population then it can be sign of environmental issues, deforestation or pesticides.
